Podcast:
Col. Bruce Hampton (Ret.)
We talk with a master of musical mayhem
Col. Bruce Hampton says he's not good enough to be humble. Some
of the musicians he's mentored are so good they don't have to
be humble.
Think
Derek Trucks, who Hampton has been hyping since the kid was
10, and was recently on the cover of Rolling Stone with John
Mayer and John Frusciante hailed as the greatest guitarists
on the planet. Trucks has his own Derek Trucks Band on top of
its game, and shares guitar duties with Warren Haynes in the
Allman Brothers.
Or
Oteil Burbridge, who makes jaws drop with his bass playing.
Burbridge can be seen with the Allman Brothers, or with his
own group, Oteil and the Peacemakers.
Take
Jimmy Herring, now with Widespread Panic. Herring has also played
with the Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends, and of course, the Allmans.
Jeff
Sipe, drummer for Keller Williams, the Drew Emmitt Band and
Susan Tedeschi, shared the stage with Hampton, Burbridge, Herring
and others in Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.
The
ARU broke up years ago, but still reunites occasionally to blow
minds. These days, though, Hampton is out with a new bunch of
musical rowdies, the Quark Alliance.
We
spent a bunch of time on the phone with Hampton last Friday
(July 6, 2007), talking about all those musicians and more,
plus other Hampton associates, such as Billy Bob Thornton, and
Hampton's own inspirations, such as the Prophet Omega.
We got so much information, it was best to make two podcasts
a short version for those of you who just can't handle
so much info, and the full-on version, which includes more music
and much more conversation. Take your pick. Then go see Col.
Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance on Friday and Saturday
at 202 Market, downtown Roanoke.
